Powerful storms with 75 mph winds ripped through the state of Michigan late Thursday toppling trees, destroying properties, and causing at least five fatalities.
The National Weather Service announced on Friday that two tornadoes tore through western Michigan bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall that caused flooding in the Detroit area.
Kent County authorities said that a 21-year-old woman and two girls aged 1 and 3 died in a car crash during the storm.
Another person died in Lansing when a tree fell on a residence and a fifth victim was killed in Ingham County after more than 25 vehicles were stranded on Interstate 96.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a State of Emergency Operations Center late Thursday to deal with the damage and help the affected communities.
