Homecoming king killed in DUI crash when friend tried showing off truck's exhaust

A beloved Minnesota homecoming king was killed in a tragic DUI crash when his drunk classmate tried showing off a new modification of his truck’s exhaust.

Izak Schermerhorn, 18, now faces three counts of criminal vehicular homicide in connection with the Tuesday collision that killed his friend, Blake Unger, also 18.

The driver consumed three to four Mike’s Hard Lemonades before taking Unger for a late-night drive to showcase the modifications.

  • Schermerhorn admitted he was intentionally “fishtailing” back and forth on a gravel road before losing control of the truck that flipped and rolled into a ditch, pinning the passenger underneath.

    The suspect expressed deep remorse for the accident, telling cops he had been sober for a year after past struggles with alcoholism.

    He and Unger, a standout multi-sport athlete at New York Mills High School, were celebrating their recent graduation on that fateful night.
