SC deputy charged for fatally shooting unarmed suspect; ordering police dog to attack innocent man

A Florence County deputy was charged this week after he allegedly shot an unarmed suspect several times killing him and unleashed his police dog at an innocent man last May.

On Wednesday, state agents arrested former Florence County deputy Treyvon Jonathan Sellers who was fired last July following an unrelated domestic incident.

Sellers was charged with voluntary manslaughter, and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

  • The two-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office was reportedly chasing 43-year-old William Dwayne Rankin on May 26 when the latter crashed into a tree and fled on foot.

    Rankin hid inside a nearby home leading Sellers to break into the residence with his dog without permission.

    Sellers, 29, allegedly ordered his dog to attack the homeowner who did not know the suspect, and let the dog maul him for more than a minute.

    In the meantime, Sellers shot Rankin five times as he lay on a couch, killing him.
