Shootout on busy Birmingham street leaves 1 dead; 5 wounded

An exchange of gunfire between at least two parties on a busy Birmingham street has left one person dead and five others wounded early Sunday.

Officers responding to reports of a shooting in west Birmingham shortly before 2 a.m. found a sedan that had crashed into a utility pole with a deceased driver inside it.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old David Westbrook of Wartrace, Tennessee.

    Four other victims showed up at local hospitals seeking treatment for gunshot injuries.

    Officer Truman Fitzgerald said multiple cars and at least one local business were hit by bullets.

    The scene was described as “chaotic” with more than 150 shots fired in the shootout.
