Illinois mom struck to head with stray bullet while reading Bible to baby ‘getting ready to sleep’

Illinois authorities have not named a suspect yet in connection to an accidental shooting that claimed a Zion mom’s life as she prepared her infant daughter to bed Sunday night.

23-year-old Melanie Yates was struck to the head by a stray bullet as she read the Bible to her 7-month-old daughter at around 9 p.m.

  • “For my daughter to be shot in the head, she’s reading the Bible to her youngest 7-month-old daughter, getting ready for bed. It’s unreal,” the victim’s mom said.

    Police said that they’ve found shell casings around the victim’s home but made no arrests yet. A GoFundMe page for Yates’ family raised up to $40,000.

    “Everybody who knew Lanie knows she loved Jesus Christ with every fiber of her being,” the victim’s brother said. “There is no doubt whatsoever that she is in heaven at this very moment. But was on earth miss her very dearly.”
