The best friend of the suspect in the targeted shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers said he received a disturbing message from him after he carried out his shooting spree.
Vance Boelter remains at large after he was identified as the suspect in the murder of DFL Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the attempted murder of DFL Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
Police were searching Boelter’s home in North Minnesota on Saturday and removed some of his belongings.
His roommate and friend, David Carlson, said that he would stay there a few days a week. He last received a text from the suspect at around 6 a.m.
The 57-year-old suspect reportedly told Carlson he would be dead shortly and that he loves him. Carlson initially thought Boelter was about to harm himself.
“David and Ron, I love you guys. I made some choices, and you guys don’t know anything about this, but I’m going to be gone for a while,” Carlson read through tears.
The roommate told reporters his friend was a fervent supporter of President Donald Trump and a Christian who opposed abortion. However, he never talked about state politics.
“I don’t know why he did what he did. It’s just not Vance…He had lots of friends, trust me, and I wish I could have been there to stop him,” Carlson said.
