6 children, 6 adults hospitalized after explosion at Detroit apartment

Six children were among 12 people hospitalized after an explosion that rocked a Detroit apartment building early Monday morning, authorities said.

The blast occurred at around 4 a.m. Monday and destroyed the building. Firefighters arrived at the scene and saw residents jumping out of the windows in an attempt to escape.

12 people were taken to area hospitals, including three in critical condition: a man with burns to 90% of his body, a woman with burns to 40% of her body, and a toddler girl with burns to 15 % of her body.

The other victims were not seriously harmed and were released from the hospital after receiving treatment.

  • “I was laying in bed and all of a sudden ‘Boom!’” a neighbor recalled.

    “I see this thing as people are still starting to come around and come out of there, and I’m trying to get 911.”

    The Detroit Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the blast. Those who escaped the blast are now looking for a place to live.

    “Put my trust and my faith in God, man, that’s all I really can do from this point,” one said.
