An armed suspect was gunned down by Garland Police officers after he allegedly killed another person at a Motel 6 on Wednesday.
Police believe the second victim died prior to the standoff that started as an issue between staff and a tenant at the Motel 6 off LBJ Freeway just before 2 p.m.
The 52-year-old tenant, identified as Shawn Dylan Burt, had overstayed his reservation, and officers were talking with him when he pointed a gun at them.
The tenant’s past criminal history led to the deployment of a SWAT team, which evacuated the motel and tried to negotiate with Burt, who barricaded himself inside his room.
A subsequent confrontation ended with the death of Burt after he was fatally shot when he pointed his gun at an officer.
A deceased individual was found inside the room. He was later identified as a 69-year-old Donald Bailey.
Bailey is believed to have died “some time prior to the incident” from a gunshot wound.
