An Alabama high school basketball player was gunned down Tuesday following a game, officials said.
Gerald Andre Lomax Jr., 17, was taken off life support Wednesday, hours after he was shot when an altercation turned into gunfire.
The teen’s family was trying to break up the fight that followed the Woodlawn vs. Jackson-Olin basketball game when he sustained the fatal gunshot wounds.
“He always had a smile and was gonna make it his business to speak every time he saw you,” a post mourning the Jackson-Olin High School player reads.
Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Mark Sullivan expressed his “heartfelt condolences to the family.”
“Parents and guardians, I’m asking for your help. Recent acts of senseless violence have no place in our community,” Sullivan said.
“We owe it to our children to give them the safest environment possible, and the opportunity to enjoy a full life.”
