An Oklahoma couple has been charged in connection to the death of their 1-year-old daughter who died 18 hours before police were called.
Christopher Paul Johnson, 39, and Kourtany Johnson, 31, were arrested on charges of child neglect on March 3 after their daughter was found dead inside an unsanitary home.
Christopher allegedly told police that while watching the child on March 2, he opened a bottle of methadone and briefly turned around to find out that the toddler spilled some on herself.
The father admitted that he suspected the girl had ingested some of it but believed it was not enough to harm her and still asked Kourtany to take the child to a hospital.
The woman feared authorities would take her children away from her and did not seek medical help for the toddler, putting her to bed.
The girl was found dead the following morning. The medical examiner determined that the baby died 18 hours before she was found by police.
Prosecutors said the victim and her siblings were living in deplorable conditions and showed signs of severe neglect.
