Houston news, Texas news.

A Houston area woman is dead after she was fatally shot in her sleep when her neighbor was targeting car thieves, authorities said Thursday.

29-year-old Bethany Mefford was found unresponsive in her bed at around 6 a.m. with a gunshot wound in the head.

Police determined that the victim was shot in her sleep at around 2:30 a.m. when her neighbor Darius Lewis fired multiple times at car burglars outside their apartment complex.

“And to just be taken in your sleep, taken away from your family that loves you more than life, it's a senseless crime.”

Lewis, who was charged with manslaughter, told investigators that he fired once to the ground to scare the thieves away but fired again when they “were not moving fast enough for him.”
