Texas authorities said that a Carrollton Police officer died on duty Tuesday night while responding to the scene of a DUI arrest.
Officer Steve Nothem, a father of four, was fatally struck by a passing car in the westbound lanes of 1905 E. President George Bush Turnpike shortly before 10:30 p.m. while backing up a fellow officer.
82-year-old Phillip Parker, who was behind the wheel of the vehicle that hit Nothem, was also declared dead at the scene.
“We are devastated by the loss of our favorite Wisconsin transplant, but we are comforted by the everlasting memories we have of his goofy demeanor, kind heart, and unforgettable Wisconsin accent on our radios.”
The fallen officer served in the U.S. Marines before joining the Grand Chute Police Department in Wisconsin and ultimately the Carrollton Police Department.
