Chicago Police have arrested a mentally ill man who had allegedly punched a relative toddler in the face multiple times causing his death.
The 23-month-old child and the suspect were not identified but police said that the pair was relatives staying at a Bronzeville home when the incident unfolded Monday afternoon.
The tragedy was described as a domestic abuse situation and the suspect, who is mentally ill according to police, was taken into custody following the child’s death.
The victim is the fifth child under 10 in Chicago to be killed since July 4th in gun violence: “Thoughts and prayers are simply not enough at this point,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said. “Sorrow itself is not enough. What it says is we need to do better as a city.”
