A Kentucky teacher fatally struck a pedestrian while driving intoxicated to school, officials said.
The hit-and-run crash occurred on the morning of April 16 in Lexington when Jamie Caldwell struck 32-year-old Joshua Hampton and took off from the scene.
The Glendover Elementary School teacher was arrested at her workplace. Officers reported that the teacher smelled of alcohol and failed a field sobriety test.
Caldwell’s breath test results came back at .278, more than three times the legal limit.
The teacher admitted to drinking the previous night and taking anxiety and blood pressure medication.
She also said she heard a “thud” but was not aware she had struck someone.
“Due to the ongoing investigation and the confidential nature of personnel matters, we are limited in what we can share at this time,” the Fayette County Public School District Spokesperson, Dia Davidson-Smith, said.
“However, we can confirm that the employee has been placed on administrative leave.”
