An argument between two men on a New York City subway turned into a fatal stabbing after one of them stepped on the other’s shoes.
On Wednesday, 46-year-old Luis Jose-Duarte was arrested on first-degree manslaughter charges in connection with the April 25 death of John Sheldon, 38.
Investigators said Jose-Duarte stepped on Sheldon’s shoes at around 8:30 a.m. Friday in the lower Manhattan station near the Brooklyn Bridge.
The victim was stabbed on the train and after getting off it before he collapsed on the platform.
He suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he died.
The slaying is the first on the subway this year. Riders hoped to see more patrolling the system to prevent such crimes.
“Obviously, it freaks me out, but it’s New York. It’s a normal thing,” a young student said.
“I’m just glad I didn’t see it.”
