Alabama inmate dies days after he was found ‘hanging’ in cell

An Alabama inmate died Wednesday evening, days after he “attempted to harm himself” inside his cell at the Jefferson County Jail.

Charlie James Dunn, 27, used a bed sheet to hang himself inside his cell on April 26.

He was rushed to UAB Medical West, where he died at 3:52 p.m. Wednesday.

  • Dunn was kept on life support after his death because he was an organ donor. All charges against him were dismissed.

    The inmate was arrested in Bessemer on April 14 on charges of drug possession and receiving stolen property, and was also indicted for attempted murder for shooting into a vehicle.

    His death marks the second time a Jefferson County Jail inmate has died by suicide in less than a month.
