'Terrible accident': NY teen wearing noise-canceling headphones gets struck, killed by train

A New York teen was fatally struck by a train in a “terrible tragedy” early Tuesday, authorities in Fenton said.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office identified the teen as 17-year-old Jacob McCloe, a Chenango Valley High School student.

Investigators said that McCloe was wearing noise-canceling headphones and didn't hear the train's operator signals to him.

  • “This tragic loss of life was nothing other than a terrible accident,” Sheriff Fred Akshar said.

    School District Superintendent Jennifer Ostrander said in a letter to parents that counseling and support services will be provided to students following the tragedy.

    “This is an incredibly difficult time for our community, and our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the student,” the superintendent said.

    “We ask that you respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time and that we come together as a community to offer our condolences and support.”
