Valley news, Alabama news.

An elderly Alabama woman died in a horrific way last March after being tied to a chair, deprived of water, food, and medication in a roach-infested living room.

Janice Hawkins, 72, suffered diabetes and malnutrition with her body mass index equaling 14 before she passed on March 16; her husband, Walter Hawkins, then called 911 to ask for a coroner.

“You could tell that the cats did not have-use litter boxes,” Valley Police Chief Mike Reynolds said.

Investigators believe that Walter and the couple’s daughter Christy Hawkins had begun the deadly abuse against Janice in 2014, something neighbors confirmed adding that Janice had requested help on multiple occasions.

“The neighbors over there – they were just threatening the man or the woman with a hammer calling them the N-word, being nasty,” one recalled.
