Nearly 1.8 million eye drops were recalled nationwide over manufacturing issues that may have resulted in a “lack of assurance of sterility.”

The Food and Drug Administration and the product’s distributor AvKARE, did not specify the health hazards of using the recalled eye drops.

“It is not possible to rule out patient risks resulting from use of these products,” the distributor’s notice reads.

Unsterilized eye drops can lead to serious infections, temporary vision loss, and even blindness.

The recalled products include Artificial Tears Ophtalmic Solution, Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Gel 1%, and Lubricant Eye Drops Solution and Polyvinyl Alcohol Ophthalmic Solution.

The drops were distributed between May 26, 2023, and April 21, 2025, and are used to alleviate dry eye symptoms.

AvKARE is urging consumers who purchased the contaminated eye drops to stop using them and asking stores to remove them from their inventory.
