A Kansas mother was charged with murder after she allegedly crashed killing her baby while trying to elude police Sunday evening.
The 17-month-old died after Maria Papalas, who had slammed her car into a wall, refused to stop and talk to an Atchison Deputy leading him in a high-speed chase.
The deputy recalled seeing a cloud of dust before realizing that Papalas went off-road over a fence and crashed into trees with the car rolling over multiple times before it came to a top.
Papalas got out of the vehicle and reached into the backseat of her wrecked car, pulling out her dying baby.
She reportedly assaulted the deputy as he tried to arrest her and tend to the baby before medics arrived and took the boy to Children’s Mercy Hospital where he died Tuesday.
Papalas now faces charges of first-degree murder, fleeing a law enforcement officer, aggravated endangering of a child, interference with law enforcement, battery on a law enforcement officer driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, possession of marijuana, and reckless driving.
