S.D. murder suspect takes own life after police chase in Colorado

A man accused of committing a murder in Custer, South Dakota took his own life in northern Colorado hours later after a police chase.

The suspect fled after allegedly killing a man and assaulting a woman during a domestic incident at a home near U.S. Highway 16 at around 9:45 p.m. Friday.

Authorities fled to Wyoming and then to Colorado where Larimer County Sheriff’s deputies located his pickup truck at around 2 a.m.

The suspect tried to elude law enforcement as he traveled on Interstate 25 at which point tire spikes and a PIT maneuver were used to stop his vehicle.

  • “The man stayed inside the truck, and before they could contact him, he shot himself” just south of the Wellington exit roughly 65 miles north of Denver and about 280 highway miles from Custer.

    Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Troy Badberg said that officers did not fire their weapons throughout the ordeal.

    “This was an extremely dangerous situation involving an armed suspect with a disturbing disregard for public safety,” Badberg said.

    “Dispatchers, investigators, and peace officers across multiple states worked together quickly and did everything they could to prevent harm to innocent people.”
