‘His life had meaning’: Mass. officer fatally struck by excavator while working at construction site

A veteran Billerica Police officer was tragically killed while working as a detail at a construction site Friday.

Sgt. Ian Taylor, 49, was fatally struck by an excavator moving equipment at the intersection of Boston Road at Pollard Street at around 2 p.m.

  • “I heard someone screaming,” a witness recalled. “I heard a truck come to a screeching stop…saw a police officer on the ground.”

    Billerica Police Chief Roy Frost said that Taylor, who succumbed at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, was a veteran of the department.

    “I want you folks to know that Sgt. Taylor made an impact while he was here. His life had meaning. He’s helped so many people. He’s saved so many people,” he said.
