Colorado officer killed on-duty after suspect runs over her

An on-duty Colorado officer was killed Thursday when a wanted suspect ran over her as she attempted to apprehend him for a felony warrant.

The hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of Officer Christine Guerin Sandoval and injured another officer took place west of Interstate 25 near downtown Colorado Springs.

41-year-old Justin Kula fled the scene but was later arrested after a statewide search and a Blue Alert were issued.

  • “It is with deep sadness that I let you know that a community parole officer died today as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty,” Andre Stancil, director of the state Department of Corrections, said.

    “My heart is broken for the family; the family of the officer and our entire department.”

    Kula was booked into El Paso County Jail facing charges of manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and assault on a peace officer.
