An Alabama woman was found hanging in her Semmes home after she drowned her two young children in a tragic murder-suicide, police said Thursday.
Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said at a press conference Friday that 37-year-old Nancy Johnson had a history of psychiatric issues insisting that her estranged husband and the children’s father was not involved in the incident.
The bodies of Johnson, 2-year-old Jacob, and 5-year-old Mia were discovered by the father inside their Evergreen Court home.
Autopsies revealed that the children were drowned with Mia suffering lacerations to her throat that contributed to her death.
The children’s bodies were on a sofa in the living room, covered with blankets. Their mother’s body was hanging in the master closet.
“We have learned there were clearly some psychiatric issues with the mother,” the sheriff said.
“We’re learning more about that as the hours go by. There are court documents which make reference to her mental condition.”
