Family and Gretna community are mourning the passing of a beloved pastor and musician who had succumbed to the coronavirus a month after contracting the illness at a gathering in New Orleans.

Landon Spradlin felt sick after preaching to crowds during Mardi Gras events: “Mardi Gras is like Ties Square in New York during New Year’s Eve,” the late pastor’s daughter said. “It’s a sea of people just drinking and partying. He was loud and laughing and in his element.”

While he battled the pandemic symptoms, Spradlin shared on March 13 a controversial meme decrying the “mass hysteria” news media was creating over the novel virus: “He was frustrated that the media was propagating fear as the main mode of communication,” Spradlin’s son said.
