Police Officer Michael Smith dies weeks after he was shot in the face in the line of duty.

the Henry County Police Department announced Friday morning, that the officer who was wounded in a line-of-duty shooting earlier this month has died as a result of his injuries.

Henry County Officer Michael Smith died at 4:30 a.m. at Piedmont Hospital due to complications from the injuries he sustained from a gunshot wound in the line of duty.

Officer Smith responded to a call at Smile Creators Family and Cosmetic Dentistry on Jonesboro Road at about 8 a.m. Dec. 6 where a man was causing a disturbance in the lobby, 53-year-old Dimaggio McNelly was struggling with Smith, when the officer's gun went off, hitting both of them. McNelly also died in the shooting.

The Police Department posted the following message on its Facebook page this morning:

"It is with deep sadness to announce that Officer Michael Smith passed away approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning at Piedmont Hospital due to complications from injuries he sustained from a gunshot wound in the line of duty. Please keep the Smith family in your prayers. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming."
