Florida public schools will be required to give students at least five hours of mental health education starting in grade 6 after the state's education council approved the changes to the program on Wednesday. .

According to the News Service of Florida, students will have to take classes "to help them identify the signs and symptoms of mental illness, find resources if they are fighting depression or other problems."

The new curriculum has no implementation date.

Ministry of Education spokesperson Cheryl Etters said every school district could choose the mental health courses to offer students. Potential classes explore issues related to cyberbullying, the effects of addiction, or suicide prevention.
