The new mayor of Chicago is in trouble with the police department of the city. The city continues to experience many more homicides than New York and Los Angeles, as well as many other acts of violence.

The mayor made the comments while in New York City to attend the inauguration of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, funded by former New York City billionaire mayor Michael Bloomberg, to give residents of New York City, [mayors] the tools and expertise needed to effectively lead complex cities. Lightfoot's comments were also shot during one of the city's bloodiest weekends, during which more than 40 people were killed, nine dead.

Just before Independence Day, 50 people were shot dead. And despite the deployment of 1,200 additional officers in the city, at least 43 people were shot dead during the Memorial Day weekend, including seven deadly.

More than 1,500 additional police officers from Chicago traveled to the streets, parks and lakefront for the holidays of July 4th, usually one of the most violent weekends of the year.
