California authorities announced the arrest of a couple accused of locking their small children into cages while they used drugs.

Ramon Alberto Zendejas and Mercadies Irene Williams, both 25, were arrested last Friday and had pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to their children confinement charges.

The mother was released on her own recognizance and expected to make a court appearance on May 7, according to Mondoc County Sheriff's Department. The father was denied bail due to prior criminal probation.

Responding officers had discovered the children's cages attached to a wall. The kids were "locked in two separate modified cribs that were stacked on top of one another and secured to the wall like dog crates," police said in a statement.
