Deadly shootout in Memphis leaves officer; teen suspect dead

A Memphis Police officer was killed in an early Friday morning shootout that also left a suspect dead, authorities said.

Three other officers and two suspects were injured in the incident that occurred at around 2 a.m. as police responded to multiple reports of a black vehicle driving recklessly at Hewlett Road and Horn Lake Road.

The three suspects started firing at officers as they approached their car before fleeing the scene. They were eventually located on Hewlett Road.

    The deceased suspect was an 18-year-old who was just released from jail last month. He was reportedly firing at the officers with a modified semi-automatic weapon with a Glock switch attached.

    Two officers and two suspects suffered injuries that required hospitalization. A third officer was only grazed by a bullet.

    Memphis Mayor Paul Young said in a statement that he was “heartbroken about the lives lost.”
