Knife-wielding woman fatally shot by Kansas deputy after charging at officer

An Oklahoma City woman was fatally shot by a Kansas deputy Tuesday morning after she brandished a knife and attacked officers.

54-year-old Cheryl R. Gaines was holding a knife in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other when she stopped her car in the middle of U.S. Highway 60 at around 7 a.m. Tuesday.

A Harper County deputy and an Attica police officer responded to the scene and called for backup when they spotted the armed driver.

  • Gaines reportedly stepped out of her vehicle and did not comply with the officers’ commands, charging at the Attica officer who tripped and fell.

    The deputy then fired three shots killing Gaines at the scene.

    The Kansas Bureau of Investigations is handling the probe into the fatal shooting.
