2 inmates dead; 5 wounded after van carrying them from workplace crashed in Alabama

Two inmates were killed and five others wounded Wednesday after their van crashed on the way from work to a detention center in Dadeville, Alabama.

The victims were being transported to the Alex City Community Based Facility in Alexander City when the deadly crash happened, officials said.

Two inmates died in the crash, later identified as Willie Crayton and Bruce Clements, and a third required hospitalization.

  • Four other inmates were treated at the scene. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

    “Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” Corrections Commissioner John Q. Hamm said.

    “We will be doing all we can to support the staff and inmates affected by this tragic event.”
