Prosecutors demanded a 10-year prison sentence for Roland Bourgeois Jr, a white man, 56, who shot three black men. The man pleaded guilty to two criminal charges in October.

The shooting occurred approximately three days after Katrina struck the shores of the Gulf of Louisiana and Mississippi on August 29, 2005.

Prosecutors said Bourgeois and others had discussed shooting blacks and defending Algiers Point in New Orleans against "strangers" after the storm. Before and after the shooting, his conversations were punctuated by racial epithets.

Bourgeois was indicted in 2010. His case dragged on for years with a series of delays and hearings related to his physical and mental health.

He was on bail for part of this period, but was jailed in August 2017 for breach of bail. The documents show that, at the time he was arrested for violating the conditions of his release, the United States Marshals recovered 10 rifles and seven handguns in the residence where he lived.

Last June, Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon set the trial date for November. The sentence of imprisonment of Bourgeois would be at least five years and not more than ten years.
