A Philadelphia police officer was rescued from his wrecked cruiser moments before it burst into flames after it collided with a bridge support.

Officer Matthew Smyth, 31, was responding to a call after hearing gunshots while on patrol in North Philadelphia. His cruiser crashed into a bridge support, and shortly after the crash the vehicle caught fire.

Police officers rushed to the crash scene and were able to help Smyth who was stuck inside. He was pulled out the burning cruiser moments before it erupted in flames.

Smyth suffered cervical spine and hip fractures and was repeatedly asking for something to drink.

The nine-year veteran remained in hospital but won't face paralysis.
