The man accused of shooting Newman Police Corporal Ronil 'Ron' Singh has been captured in the Bakersfield area Friday morning.
the still unnamed suspect was taken into custody in Bakersfield, California, which is about 200 miles from where the officer was killed on.
Cpl. Ronil Singh, 33, was shot and killed by a man he pulled over for suspected driving under the influence early Wednesday morning.
Sheriff Christianson said that the suspect they have identified was in the country illegally.
Singh was the first officer to die in the line of duty, in a department with 12 sworn officers.
The suspect’s illegal status caught the attention of President Donald Trump, whose demand that Congress approve $5 billion for a U.S. southern border wall has led to a partial government shutdown. Trump tweeted Thursday about Singh's killing,
" There is right now a full-scale manhunt going on in California for an illegal immigrant accused of shooting and killing a police officer during a traffic stop. Time to get tough on Border Security. Build the Wall!"
