More children and teens are dying because of Opioids

A study shows that an increasing number of children and adolescents are dying of opioid poisoning in the United States.

A report published Friday in the journal JAMA Network Open announces that Nearly 9 000 pediatric deaths were attributed during the period 1999 to 2016. During this period, the rate of death of young people due to opioid poisoning has almost tripled.

An epidemic of prescription and illicit opioid abuse, affects all segments of American society, including the pediatric population "the researchers wrote.A public health problem, especially among middle-aged and young white men .

Research shows that the number of children admitted to hospitals for opioid overdose almost doubled between 2004 and 2015.

This new study aims to determine who is dying.

According to the figures, 8,986 children and adolescents who died from opioid intoxication during the period between 1999 and 2016, about 73% were men and about 88% were adolescents aged 15 to 19 years.
