A Newman police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop Wednesday morning, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said.

Officer Ronil Singh, 33, called off a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Newman. Moments later, he called out "shots fired" over the radio. Multiple officers responded and found that Singh had been shot. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Officials released images after the shooting of a gray, extended cab Dodge Ram pickup truck that was seen in the area at the time of the shooting and a man identified as a person of interest in the case.

There is a manhunt involving several Stanislaus County agencies occurring this morning throughout Stanislaus County and neighboring areas. Highway 33, at Stuhr Road, was blocked at 8 a.m.

Singh was a native of Fiji and has been employed by the Newman Police Department since July 2011.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Detective Michael Fisher at 209-525-7083 or dispatch at 209-552-2468.
