A North Carolina fifth-grade teacher died after falling sick during a school fire drill, authorities said.

Kim Hunter Daugherty, 45, is the daughter of Major League Baseball star Jim "Catfish" hunter who played for the Oakland Athletics. She died Thursday morning of an undisclosed medical emergency at Hertford Grammar School.

The teacher was the first girl in Perquimans County to play on the previously all-boy Little League teams, she had been a teacher for 20 years.

Perquimans County school assistant superintendent James Bunch said Daugherty "was a great teacher, a great colleague and she was loved."

School was closed mourning the teacher, as counselors and ministers were made available that day.
