A human heart found on a commercial plane forcing it to head back to Seattle

A human heart has been found on a plane heading to Dallas, about 90 minutes after leaving Seattle last Sunday, forced the pilot to make a hairpin turn to deliver it in case it was needed to save a life.

The heart traveled in the cargo compartment of a Southwest Airlines flight from Sacramento to Seattle. It was supposed to be delivered in Seattle but instead remained on the plane as it left for Dallas. The OPO which collected the heart from a donor said a courier did not show up in time to collect the heart. Southwest Airlines admitted that the crew did not remove the heart from the cargo compartment.

Greg Segal, a co-founder of the activist group Organize, said Friday that "the cases the public hears about are only the tip of the iceberg, organs are lost every day."
