A 31-year-old New Jersey man has been charged in the accidental shooting death of his 4-year-old son who played with an unsecured gun while he slept.

Andrew Mack was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and improperly storing a weapon with minors nearby, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said.

Officers responded to the home on Friday, Feb. 7 at around 7 p.m. and found Lincoln Mack with a single gunshot wound to his cheek. The boy was transported to Capital Health where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said that the child found the unsecured gun next to his sleeping dad and went to play with it: "The death of Lincoln Mack was a tragedy, and it was entirely avoidable," Prosecutor Scott Coffina said. "The defendant must be held accountable for not securing his firearm."
