Suspect in ‘cold, calculated and extremely violent’ murder arrested; Motive still mysterious

Dane County news, Wisconsin news.

Dane County police are considering all the possibilities in their efforts to determine what led a young man from a “very nice family” to brutally murder another in what was described as a “cold, calculated and extremely violent” case.

The body of Nicholas Day was discovered by a passerby on January 15 and autopsy results have since confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound and several lacerations to his neck. The wounds were hideous and investigators believe there might be a strong motive behind the murder.

On Thursday night, 21-year-old Riley Berg has been arrested on first-degree murder charges. The men who belonged to the quiet and small Mt. Horeb community were both from nice families: “I’ve lived here all my life. This is the first time I’ve heard this happening,” a resident said.
