MTA officials and law enforcement announced Friday the death of a man who was about 100 feet away from the Fifth Avenue-59th Street station in Midtown before being struck by a train.

The tragedy occurred at around 11 a.m. in the northbound N/R/W tunnel. The victim’s identity and age have not been released and it remains unclear how he ended up on the tracks. He was declared dead at the scene.

Following the incident, straphanger Yair Rosenberg who came to the subway station to take the train to work as usual said: “I had been wondering when I came in why there were so many police cars and FDNY vehicles outside. And then they announced the station was closed and you should leave.”
