California authorities arrested a father who was about to be released from jail on new murder charges after investigators linked him to the deaths of his five newborn babies.

Paul Perez, 57, will face new charges days before his release for a sentence he served for vehicle theft and weapon possession. He’s expected to stand before a judge on Tuesday after an investigation launched in 2019 linked him to the murders of his five children between 1992 and 2001.

“The allegations we are discussing today are senseless, evil and heartbreaking,” said Ed Medrano, a California police official.

Police identified the remains of Nikko Lee Perez who has been found in a container weighed down with heavy objects in waters. They later discovered that four more siblings died while less than 6 months old.
