According to witnesses, the incident occurred at around 7 a.m. when the 90-year-old victim was crossing Canal St. near Elizabeth St. Suddenly, a Department of Sanitation supervisor, 61-year-old, struck him with a DSNY-marked Ford Escape sedan. The unidentified victim was crossing at the corner when he was hit.

He was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead that same day.

In a statement, a DSNY spokeswoman said: “We take this tragedy very seriously. We are cooperating with the NYPD in their investigation. Additionally, the Department of Sanitation is conducting its own internal investigation.”
