Virginia police officer fatally dragged by car trying to evade traffic stop

A police officer has lost her life when she was dragged by a vehicle whose driver tried to escape a traffic stop on Thursday night.

24-year-old Katie Thyne sustained multiple injuries before the vehicle crashed into a tree causing her to crash as well.

“At some point during the encounter with the driver, he accelerated, dragging the officer,” the Newport News Police Department. “After being transported to the hospital, the officer succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.”

Thyne had served in the U.S. Navy Reserves before joining the department in 2018. She is survived by a 2-year-old daughter: “If you met her if you ever saw her, all she did was smile,” Chief Steve Drew emotionally said.

The suspect has been arrested after a short foot chase.
