California authorities are investigating a tragic crash that killed a Mercedes-Benz driver who jumped over the San Joaquin River at 100 mph to escape from police.

"In my 20 years, I've never seen a vehicle travel close to that distance," CHP spokesman Mike Salas said, adding that the car traveled nearly 337 feet, taking the tops of trees as it landed and leaving officers completely stunned. Behind the wheel, David Callahan, 58, was found dead.

The unusual chase started when Callahan was asked to pull over by officers who noticed his swerving car around 8:30 a.m. Investigators said that a domestic incident caused his agitated state of mind.

"To do what he did in his car today," CHP Off. Matt Zulim said. "He jumped the river. You never want to see someone die, especially in this fashion."
