A Rhode Island suspect accused of stabbing his elderly neighbor more than 70 times was denied bail on Wednesday, reports said.

Matthew Dusseault, 22, was ordered to be held without bail as he awaits trial in the brutal slaying of 81-year-old Constance Gauthier who was found dead with more than 70 stab wounds in her bedroom in March 2016.

It took investigators more than three years to identify Dusseault as the main suspect in the gruesome murder. He was arrested last July after DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene.

"This murder was a particularly brutal and violent murder," Sup. Court Magistrate Richard Raspallo said.

Dusseault's defense team argued that even if DNA was on the crime scene, that doesn't mean he was the murderer.
