The 16-year-old, who killed five of his comrades in southern California on Thursday, is dead, officials said Friday.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office confirmed the death of Nathaniel Tennosuke Berhow at 3:32 pm His mother was present at the time, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

According to the authorities, Berhow pulled a weapon from his backpack at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita (a suburb of Los Angeles), fired at five random students, and shot himself in the head. Investigators said Friday they had not revealed the reason for the shooting.

The attack killed Gracie Muehlberger, 15, and Dominic Blackwell, 14. Two girls remain hospitalized but should be released this weekend.
