Convicted murderer of store clerk to be executed in Georgia

Jackson news, Georgia news.

A Georgia death row inmate convicted of a 1994 murder will be executed on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

Ray Jefferson Cromartie will receive the lethal injection at the state prison in Jackson for the shooting death of 50-year-old Richard Slysz, a store clerk, that occurred in April 1994.

Cromartie is also accused of shooting another store clerk, severely injuring him in the face.

The inmate's lawyers said that he still insists he was innocent and didn't kill or injure anyone. The defense team asked supreme court judges to conduct DNA testing on evidence such as shell casings and clothing found at the scene. They contend that the DNA testing results could prove his innocence. Despite their efforts, these appeals have been declined.
