A Utah 78-year-old death row inmate has died of natural causes in prison months before his execution that was set for 2020.

Ron Lafferty died at Draper prison, according to corrections officials. He was sentenced to death for the 1985 deaths of his sister-in-law, Brenda Lafferty, and her 15-month-old Erica.

Lafferty had strangled the woman with a vacuum cleaner cord in her Fork apartment and slashed her throat before doing the same to the toddler. His brother, Allen Lafferty came home to find the pair in pools of blood near the baby's crib.

Ron has perpetrated the murders with the help of his other brother, Dan Lafferty, who has been sentenced to life in prison. The pair targeted the woman because she opposed their polygamy beliefs.
